The always-delightful Deborah Madison has been a HUGE influence on my cooking. I can’t recommend her books enough. So a big heads-up for Deborah fans: she just gave me a sneak preview of her new project, called “What We Eat When We Eat Alone.” Complete with out-there and cool illustrations by her husband, Patrick McFarlin (a rather stunning painter; check out some of his work here).
Wild stuff! I can’t wait to read it. I only wish I could have been videoed in one of these segments:
How about you? Let’s hear a few secrets about what you REALLY eat when you’re alone. Me: I go a bit feral — it usually involves multiple habaneros and eggs. And beer!

hahaha! great vid! i eat smoked oysters with a sprinkling of sea salt. have to eat ‘em alone ‘cuz hubby can’t stand the smell. oh, well! more for me!!!
I am reading that book right now! It’s one of those books that has you smiling and thinking, “Yup, I’ve eaten that.” I tend to eat sardines on a baguette when I eat alone. There’s something liberating about eating tinned seafood and not caring who smells it.
Eric, I’m glad to see the RSS feed working again!
When I’m cooking just for me, I certainly dial up the heat. While it’s easy to add heat (like my smoked Red Savina powder) at the end, it works so much better when it gets cooked in. Although sometimes, it does result in an accidental house fumigation.
I once freaked out my entire family when I was cooking for them a long time ago. They had habs at my local supermarket, and I bought all they had. I then used a few in a sauted dish, which resulted in seriously poisonous gas throughout the house. Old ladies were scarily coughing! They were not amused.
